Coloured Diamond Education
The rarest diamonds that are uniquely you.
It’s no secret we at Gemaxis favour coloured gems above all, we made it our niche to display our work as colourful can be. When it comes to Fancy Coloured Diamonds, Gemaxis Jewellery can offer you some of the rarest Diamonds available today.
Fancy Coloured Diamonds are rare gems where the stone colour appears strong. The shades of Fancy Coloured Diamonds include yellow, brown, purple, pink, red, blue, and green.
Fancy coloured diamonds are graded differently than colourless diamonds (where the less colour there is the better, because completely colourless stones are the most rare). However, while coloured gems are influenced by the four C’s (Colour, Carat, Clarity and Cut), the colour intensity is much more important, as is how evenly the colour is distributed throughout the stone.
To understand coloured diamonds, it helps to know the ways in which fancy coloured diamonds can be described:
- Hue: The colour of the diamond (green, pink, blue etc)
- Tone: How light or dark the colour is, on a scale of 0-100(black)
- Saturation: The intensity of the colour within the diamond
This is a grading system that helps define the strength of colour within a given fancy diamond. The colour strengths are:
- Faint
- Fancy Light
- Fancy
- Fancy Dark
- Fancy Deep
- Fancy Intense
- Fancy Vivid
Intense and Vivid fancy diamonds are the most rare.
Argyle Diamonds
Gemaxis being a proud Australian Jewellery brand, we would like to highlight on the now closed Argyle mine, located in the East Kimberley region in the remote north of Western Australia. Argyle was at times the largest diamond producer in the world by volume (14 million carats in 2018), although the proportion of gem-quality diamonds was low.
It is the only known significant source of pink and red diamonds (producing over 90% of the world’s supply), and additionally provided a large proportion of other naturally coloured diamonds, including champagne, cognac and rare blue diamonds.
Gemaxis Jewellery has great access to source Argyle Diamonds for our customers, even the increasingly rare pinks. If you are interested in owning a piece of Australian history as an investment in yourself or loved one, Gemaxis will guide you through it.

Hue of a Pink Diamond
The second grading scale for argyle diamonds refers only to the actual colour of the stone, known as the hue. While a pink diamond is obviously pink in colour, that colour can vary from a slight hint of purple to a hint of champagne.
This grading scale can have a large impact on price, as the rarity and desirability of each does change considerably. Typically, pink argyle diamond engagement rings and wedding rings with diamonds that are purplish pink or pink are more desirable.

Champagne Argyle Diamonds
These fancy brown diamonds, like other coloured diamonds, make for stunning engagement rings and other champagne diamond jewellery. Their eye-catching colour enhances unique pieces that offer plenty of personality. These diamonds gain their colour from traces of other elements in the crystal’s structure. Champagne diamonds contain small amounts of nitrogen trapped during diamond formation. The higher the nitrogen content, the deeper the intensity of the brown color.
Champagne diamonds are often referred to as cognac diamonds. While colourless diamonds typically lose their value with increased tint, champagne stones are specifically sought out for their beautiful, natural colouring. At Gemaxis Jewellery, we have developed a major love for coloured precious gemstones and the Argyle Champagne Diamond is one of favourite Diamonds to work with. Let us assist you in sourcing one of these stunning Diamonds and design you or your loved one a jaw-dropping piece of handmade Jewellery.
