Our Favourite Gemstones

Amethyst

The essence of the colour purple, Amethyst is beautiful enough for crown jewels yet affordable enough for class rings. The distinctive purple hue of the Amethyst is unmistakable and recognised from across the room. This gemstone is believed the most striking of the quartz family.

Alexandrite

Often described by gem aficionados as “Emerald by day, Ruby by night,” Alexandrite is the very rare colour change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it’s now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil, but fine material is exceptionally rare and valuable. This intriguing gemstone is mystique and eye-catching beautiful.

Aquamarine

The seawater colour of Aquamarine has given this gemstone its name as the name “Aquamarine” is derived from the Latin word for seawater. The refreshing light blue colours has been admired and valued throughout the years, it’s been considered a symbol of happiness and youth.

Emerald

Emerald has been synonymous with the colour green since ancient times. A fine emerald is a truly breathtaking sight, and this member of the beryl family deserves its placement among the traditional “Big Four” gems along with Diamond, Ruby, and Sapphire. At Gemaxis we value the quality of these gemstones so much, that our in-house Gemmologist will source only from reputable gemstone merchants around the world.

Garnet

Garnets are a set of closely related minerals forming a group, with gemstones in almost every colour. In the list of our favourite Garnets, we included the bright green Tsavorite Garnet, the dark red Pyrope Garnet and the rose red Rhodolite Garnet, the stone of inspiration and emotional healing. We love to work with Garnets, they are so versatile and easy to work with. Especially for larger pieces with many gemstones, the Garnet is a true standout.

Morganite

Morganite is the pink to orange-pink variety of Beryl, a mineral that includes Emerald and Aquamarine. As with most gemstones, the more richly coloured the specimen, the higher it is prized. Strong colour in Morganite is rare, and gems usually have to be large to achieve the finest colour. Our in-house Gemmologist will be able to assist you sourcing the highest quality Morganites available.

Ruby

For thousands of years, Ruby was considered the stone of love, energy, passion, power, and a zest for life. Like no other gemstone in the world, Ruby is the perfect symbol for powerful feelings. The other important element of Ruby besides fire is blood, and Ruby is said to restore vital life forces and increase energy and vigor. Ruby is also known as the stone of courage, and legend tells us that a person possessing a ruby can walk through life without fear of evil or misfortune.

Sapphire

Besides blue Sapphire and Ruby, the corundum family also includes so-called “fancy Sapphires.” They come in violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. Some stones exhibit the phenomenon known as colour change, most often going from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light. Sapphires can even be grey, black, or brown. The Sapphire is the Queen of coloured gemstones, Gemaxis Jewellery specialises in sourcing our customers the best Sapphires available.

Spinel

Although frequently confused with Ruby, Spinel stands on its own merits. Available in a striking array of colours, its long history includes many famous large spinels still in existence. The most valued spinel colours are bright red, cobalt blue, and vivid pink and orange. Pale lavender is more affordable. Together with Garnet & Sapphire, Spinel offers Gemaxis great value and flexibility with regard to creating Jewellery to suit most budgets.

Tanzanite

Poised between lush blue, vibrant violet, and rich purple, exotic tanzanite is found in only one place on earth, near majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. Named for Tanzania, the country where it was discovered in 1967, Tanzanite is the blue-to-violet or purple variety of the mineral zoisite. It’s become one of the most popular of coloured gemstones. Gemaxis has access to the highest quality Tanzanite’s available.

Topaz

The traditional November birthstone, Topaz is a popular gem. Although frequently associated with golden yellow as well as blue, it can be found in a variety of colours, including colourless. The rarest are natural pink, red, and fine golden orange, sometimes with a pink tone. Colour is the most important quality factor for Topaz, the more vivid the colour, the more its value is.

Tourmaline

Tourmalines have a variety of exciting colours with one of the widest colour ranges of any gem, including the remarkable intense violet-to-blue gems particular to Paraíba, Brazil. The stone of reconciliation is often used in solitaire pieces at Gemaxis, due to its bold presence. This is another exciting gem for our in-house Gemmologist, because of its variety in colour and quality.

Customer Love

I loved everything about my experience with this shop! When I saw the ring I knew it was the perfect one for my now fiancé. The shop owner was so nice and amazing when talking with me about the ring making process. They kept me in the loop the whole time and responded fast when I had a question. This was such a great experience that I hope to get my wedding band for this shop as well, when the time comes! Thanks you!!

The rings are so beautiful! During the whole process Hugo was super communicative and listened to my requirements, while also being able to suggest ways to improve it. My partner and I both got rings from here and Amanda was able to subtly get both of our rings to match which was a nice surprise. Would absolutely recommend to anyone! 🙂

Nick – 14 Jul 2021

I genuinely couldn't be happier with the custom rings that Hugo and Amanda did for/with us. My partner and I approached Hugo individually to work on each other's rings, and Hugo made suggestions on colours and gems combos such that our rings would match, unbeknownst to us. It has resulted in a set of rings that I feel perfectly encapsulates us, and that are a full set when all four of them are together. I really couldn't be happier with the men's set, it is so unique and I love that Amanda was able to envision my vague description of a design and make it into something that is both beautiful and practical. Thank you so much Gemaxis! We've had an awesome time.

Very happy with my purchase. From the initial enquiry through to delivery, the customer service from Hugo has been excellent. The ring is exactly what I wanted and the quality of the ring is top notch. No issues with recommending Amanda’s work.

Seller did an amazing job communicating with me while the ring was crafted and shipped. The ring itself is stunning!!!!!!! It's so elegant, and the shade is a perfect raspberry color. Definitely hope to buy again from Gemaxis in the future.
